The Making of “Emmet” by David Phillips

The richly historical Emmet Railway Station echoes sentiments of a life from long ago. In the background, a rich myriad of clouds decorate the skyline all the way to the horizon. As the rain falls, beams of light shine down, eliciting an image of both redemption and beauty in this time-honoured location.

About the Experience

On a photography workshop from the Blackall Cultural Association, alongside renowned travel photographer Nick Rains, we made our way to the historical Emmet Railway station to capture a bit of history ourselves.

We had passed by the railway station earlier during our workshop, and I was longing to get back there. After a great time photographing Mt Slocombe and having a great lunch at the Yaraka Pub, we made our way back to Blackall via Emmet.  Along with the other workshop participants, we couldn’t wait to hop off the bus, get set up, and shoot some one-of-a-kind images.

My Thoughts

I’m so glad I was able to capture this image. I really love the interplay here between the stormy clouds and the forlorn imagery of an old railway station and nearby buildings. I especially loved the Red Stop and White Food stores in the background of the image. It spoke to me as long-gone memories and that small town sentimentality I had experienced in my own past growing up in outback queensland.

Even though the hustle and bustle of the rail industry is gone, the rain and light create a feeling of redemption in the image as well. While those olden days are gone and will never return, life will press on and move forward. And even though change may be difficult for all of us, it is something to be grateful about.
