The Making of “Reaching Out” by Cheryl Eagers

With wispy clouds glowing at the horizon line of Sarina Beach Inlet, these trees make their way upwards toward the sky. Their direction shows the strength they use to grow, reaching out toward the life-giving sun.

About the Experience

I was out on a photography excursion with the Creative Shots Photo and Camera Club in Mackay. However, that day I wasn’t finding any inspiration – much to my dismay. I was looking for a unique subject and vantage point a bit away from the rest of the photographers. So I did what I do best – searched the area to find the inspiration I was seeking.

I came across a few rocks that seemed promising to shoot at first, but I could not get a great composition. Feeling a bit defeated, I turned around to head back to the rest of the group. That was when I spotted these two trees and decided to capture them in a silhouette style of picture.

There wasn’t much colour left in the sky as I set up my tripod and framed the composition. Right as I finished getting set up, the sun lit up the clouds and horizon line with a brilliant glow. It gave me the opportunity to beautifully capture these trees – right at the brink of darkness.

My Thoughts

I was reminded about a very important lesson all photographers should note: never pack up your gear until the sun has completely set. Had I packed up a few minutes earlier, I would have missed the magnificent colour in the sky provided this particular evening.

During our photo club’s adventures, we met a fellow who was a guard dog for a private jetty. While he seemed quite protective at first, his owner came out and told us all about some of his talents. Here you can check out our little video all about “Kobi the Talking Dog” saying hello and rolling over in the most adorable way.

This whole area really is a photographer’s dream. If you’d like to learn more about the Sarina Beach Inlet area, you can check out more information here:
