About the Experience
I was with the Creative Shots Photo Club on a very early morning camping photography retreat at the Eungella Dam in the National Park. While I first tried to capture some horses drinking at the water’s edge, they moved along a little faster than I could manage to set up my equipment.
However, after looking at the area I discovered this tree whose trunk and roots extended their way into the water near the Eungella Dam. The composition of the tree’s top-to-bottom is what intrigued me the most – particularly how the roots reflected on the water’s surface.
With my camera aperture set to priority enabled, I was able to better capture the dynamic and subtle movement of all the clouds while keeping the tree and reflection perfectly still.
I feel this image represents both how quickly things can change and how they can remain the same for large amounts of time. The quiet solitude and stillness of the predawn night bear little resemblance to the active excitement of the daytime.
There are beauty and depth in both of these elements of life, and that’s what I really wanted to capture here. There will always be times when we have to act fast and “hang on” through the excitement. Similarly, there will be times when we can relax our pace and move a little more slowly.
