The Making of “Sky Fire” by David Phillips

Taken in the scenic Halls Creek area of Western Australia’s Kimberley region, Sky Fire captures some of the true, authentic Australian beauty you can only find in this region. The picture was captured near the China Walls region of Halls Creek – an all-natural white stone which bears a striking resemblance to the famed Great Wall of China (albeit on a much smaller scale!)

This region offers travellers all sorts of amazing sights and sounds. And it truly showcases what the natural beauty of Western Australia is all about.

About the Experience

I decided to take a camping excursion to the Northern Territory to clear my mind and get some real inspiration from the natural world. The day I captured this shot, beautiful, wispy soft clouds had been creating these distinctive designs all day long. As sunset began to approach, I knew I had a truly extraordinary shot in the works.

I had to find higher ground to be able to include both the landscape and the brilliant sky. After finding an old dirt pathway winding its way up a hillside, I put my Pajero in 4-wheel drive and make the trek upward.

The sunset just makes it way over the horizon, creating a truly captivating interplay of orange, red, blue and violet. The cloud formations seem to flow right toward the sunset focal point to resemble radiating bands of shimmering light and colour.

My Thoughts

What I love most about this shot is how everything had to come together to capture it. I absolutely loved how the clouds streaked across the sky all day long. So when sunset began to make its way into the sky, I knew we had an amazing image in the works.

Had I not found that dirt path to get to the right elevation, I would have never been able to take this image. It was truly an epic panorama that was literally hundreds of kilometres from civilization.
