The Making of ‘Strike Two’ Mackay Harbour Photography by David Phillips
Shot at the marina of the Mackay Harbour, ‘Strike Two’ captures one of the most stunning moments I’ve ever experienced as a nature and landscape photographer.
The lights from the distant islands are dwarfed by the magnitude of the storm clouds crawling across the horizon. And the extraordinary illumination provided by this double lightning strike literally took my breath away.
The image showcases both the magnitude and power of the heavens above. It still gives me chills when I view it today.

About the Experience
Taken on a late summer evening in November, I was standing on the break wall at the Mackay Harbour Marina Park, looking over the Pacific Ocean to the Hay Point Services and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal locations.
The storm was a wild one, lighting up spots all across the islands surrounding Mackay Harbour. The lightning was dancing all over the place, making it incredibly difficult to choose a direction to point my camera!
Once I settled on this position, it was almost like the skies were putting on a show just for me. The sights and sounds of the storm were exceptional, creating light patterns that almost made my surroundings look like daytime.
Beyond the obvious lightning stealing the show, I really enjoy the way the clouds look in this picture. The storm brought a complex layer of cloud formations that was both captivating as well as intimidating with the amount of power they held. They almost look like waves coming across the sky, delivering a mystical quality to the overall dynamic of the shot.
Experiencing this type of event humbles me as a photographer. I’m humbled because I realise just how little I am amongst the incredible scope of our earth’s natural forces. It keeps me in awe and fully inspired to continue capturing these amazing moments.
