Not Sure What Kind of Tapes You Have? This Guide Can Help!
Your Video Angel – Mackay VHS to USB Service
If you’ve discovered a box of old video tapes while spring cleaning or unpacking family keepsakes, you might be wondering: What are these? And how do I even watch them anymore?
You’re not alone — and that’s exactly why I created a simple, visual guide to help you identify the tapes you have.
Why Identifying Your Tapes Matters
Before we can bring your memories back to life, we need to know what type of tape you have. Different tapes require different equipment and processes, especially when it comes to digitising them safely. Whether it’s a bulky VHS or a tiny MiniDV, recognising the format helps us ensure your footage is preserved in the best possible quality.
At Your Video Angel, we specialise in Mackay VHS to USB services and more — helping locals and families across Australia preserve their stories by converting old video tapes into digital formats you can watch on today’s devices.
The Most Common Tape Types We See
Here are four of the most common tapes we work with, and how to spot them:
- VHS Tapes
The classic black rectangle you may remember from family movie nights. About the size of a paperback novel, VHS tapes were the home video format from the 1980s through to the early 2000s. They hold up to 6 hours of footage.
- VHS-C Tapes
These are the compact camcorder version of VHS tapes. About half the size of a standard VHS, they were often used in early handheld cameras. They require an adaptor to be played in a VHS player.
3. 8mm / Hi8 / Digital8 Tapes
Slightly larger than a cassette tape, 8mm formats were popular in the late ’80s and ’90s. The casing may be labelled Video8, Hi8, or Digital8 — each refers to a generation of the same physical format.
- MiniDV Tapes
One of the smallest tape types, MiniDV tapes are about the size of a matchbox and were commonly used in digital camcorders in the 2000s. Despite their size, they can hold high-quality video and audio.
Need Help Identifying Your Tapes?
I’ve created a free downloadable guide with clear images and descriptions to help you identify your tapes at home. But if you’re still unsure, simply send a photo of your tapes to me and I’ll help you figure it out — no pressure or obligation.
