We Go Beyond the Basics to Retrieve Your Footage – Because Your Memories Matter!
At Your Video Angel, we don’t just press play and hope for the best—we go beyond the basics. we specialise in salvaging footage from tapes others might consider “too far gone.”
You see, converting old VCR to DVD or USB and camcorder tapes to digital isn’t always straightforward. Tapes deteriorate. Mould grows. Dirt and dust settle deep inside. And yet, what’s on those tapes—your memories—deserves to be preserved. That’s where our expertise comes in.
What Makes Us Different?
It starts with care and ends with commitment. Every tape that comes through our door is treated as if it were our own. If necessary, we:
- We clean every tapes using the rare specialised machines we own, often more than once
- Manually clean stubborn dirt and debris including mould tapes by hand
- Open up tape cases, splice together or rethread, adjust tensions, and rebuild them
- Switch between over 30 VCRs and camcorder units to find the best playback outcome
- Clean and re-clean our players and cameras after every dirty or mouldy tape
Each repair takes time—meticulous, focused time. It may sound simple, but it’s not. We spend hours trying, checking, and retrying to retrieve footage, yet we only charge a small portion of what that work is truly worth.
And if you’ve sent in VCR Tape to be put on DVD, a DV, Hi8, Video8, or Digital8 camcorder tapes, you should know: they can be particularly tricky. These tapes often dirty camera heads instantly, requiring repeated cleaning. But excessive cleaning damages the equipment. So I stagger the attempts—pausing for hours or even a day—swapping between several cameras just to give your tape the best chance. It’s time-consuming, frustrating at times, but I’m nothing if not persistent.
Why It’s Not Just Plug and Play
Real talk: I’ve lost count of the times tapes have arrived covered in dust, dry mud, mould, dead insects, or droppings—because they’ve been stored in sheds, shipping containers, or garages. Unfortunately, tapes in this condition can destroy my equipment, which costs hundreds of dollars to repair. These days, I won’t attempt transfers when tapes show obvious contamination. It’s just not viable.
But if a tape can be cleaned, repaired, and safely played—I’ll do all I can to bring your footage back to life. Even deteriorated footage is usually salvable, and if it’s watchable, I’ll preserve it. It’s rare that I walk away without retrieving something of value.
Things You Should Know
- Tapes and reels deteriorate—from humidity, UV exposure, poor storage, even from being overplayed or not played at all.
- Nothing about conversion is quick—footage must play in real time.
- We do more than basic conversion—we restore, repair, problem-solve, and care.
Ask These Questions Before Choosing a Converter:
- Are you a reputable business?
- Can you clean AND repair tapes and reels?
- What happens if a tape doesn’t play in your machine?
I can confidently say—yes, I can, to all the above. What I offer is not just a service, but experience refined through trial, research, and sheer persistence (with a touch of swearing and shouting in the background, if I’m honest). Why Wait?
When I hear things like:
“It’s not a priority.”
“They’re in the shed somewhere.”
“I’ve never watched them—why bother now?”
I shudder.
Because by the time you do go looking, it might be too late. I can’t bring back footage that’s already lost to time. But if it’s there—and if it’s retrievable—I’ll give it everything I’ve got to save it.
I take pride in my friendly, professional service, my problem-solving skills, and my tenacity. Your memories are important—and they deserve nothing less than someone who will fight to preserve them.
If you’ve been holding off converting your VCR to DVD or other media, now is the time.
Because what’s on those tapes?
It’s your story. And it matters.
